5 Steps To A Holiday Spirit

Holiday Spirit 1

The Beacon Bolt is a publication of the student body of Northwest Christian University.

Around this time of year I am always trying to make the proper transition into the festive spirit. As the leaves change and the clouds occlude the sunshine carrying with them heavy rains, a comforting ambiance washes over the Northwest. We embrace the opportunity to break out the flannels and boots, the baked goods and coffees are always themed and the grim weather seems to soothe the soul. I believe I have accomplished the ultimate formula to finding holiday bliss.

  1. Food

The best and most frequent technique I use is to first start off by getting a plethora of delicious holiday inspired snacks and beverages. My favorite holiday beverages are hot chocolate, pumpkin spice hot chocolate, apple cider and almost any festive coffee or chai tea. Although drinks are great, the snacks are of the utmost importance. Try making some of the Pillsbury Ready to bake holiday sugar cookies, caramel blooming apples with vanilla bean ice cream, popcorn and any of your favorite candy.

  1. Decorations

I suggest decorating for any and every holiday. The Dollar Tree has an amazing selection of holiday decor, making it easy to decorate your home, apartment or dorm room on a budget. Thanksgiving decorations should always involve a turkey or two and the classic autumn colors. Christmas is my favorite holiday to decorate for and I definitely step up my game for December. They make great decorations for either the traditional Christian decor or the more cutesy commercial side with penguins, reindeer and snowmen.

  1. Movies

One of my favorite activities for the holiday season is watching some festive movies, usually while eating pumpkin spice flavored something and cuddling up with my heated blanket. Here is a list of my must watch holiday movies this season:

  1. Home Alone
  2. A Christmas Carol
  3. The Santa Clause: 1-3
  4. A Christmas Story
  5. Any of the Peanuts Holiday Classics
  6. Frozen
  7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
  8. Elf
  9. A Christmas Story
  10. The Polar Express
  11. Activities

For Thanksgiving I like taking some time to appreciate my loved ones by sending out cards, letters or baked goods. During December I love driving around and admiring Christmas lights and decorations, going to Hoodoo Autobahn Tubing Park, decorating cookies, and hosting and/or attending Christmas parties with white elephant gift exchanges.

  1. Clothes etc.

This is one of the simplest ways of getting into the autumn-winter months, is going out and buying a new scarf, flannels, long sleeve shirts, pants and/or boots. Purchasing these new pieces of clothing will make it easier for you to pack away your shorts and sandals and smoothly transition into the colder months. Bath and Body Works is also one of my favorite places to shop during these months because there is something about candles, incense and lotions that scream holidays. They always have coupons and sales, and are constantly releasing new signature holiday scents, my current favorite is Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte.

If you follow these steps I believe you will have a smooth transition into the holiday season. Having a holiday spirit adds to the joyful atmosphere that surrounds us during this amazing time of the year. Happy holidays and God bless!
