I would definitely call myself a burger enthusiast. If I’m not exactly sure what I want to eat, burgers are my go-to meal. My love for burgers admittedly isn’t always for the patties, cheese, bun and other delicious toppings, but for the side that it comes with, fries. I love every style of fries; steak, waffle, curly, crinkle cut and even chili-cheese fries and even better if they are sweet potato. Just recently, my favorite burger and sweet potato fries joint was bumped down to the number two spot, making room for what I now consider the best burger place in Eugene. The other great news is that it’s close to campus!
The Wild Duck Café is a spunky, school-spirited Eugene restaurant that sells primarily café style foods, most inspired by the University of Oregon athletics. They sell breakfast, lunch, dinner and even dessert and are open Sunday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.-1:00 a.m and Friday & Saturday 8:00 a.m.-2:00 a.m. The atmosphere is fun, decorated with lots of U of O memorabilia, especially athletic and a few large televisions. Outdoor seating is a perfect option for the warmer days, and in addition to the great tables and booths inside.
My personal menu favorite is, “The Oregon Classic Burger: Our flagship burger is cooked to order with slider sauce and freshly made potato chips. Lettuce, tomato, pickles served on the side $9.99.” I always substitute my normal house made potato chips for the sweet potato fries with a side of ranch, the change of fries is and extra an $1.50, but is worth every penny. The freshness of this food is unbelievable. The burger’s patty is thick and tastes amazing, probably because the burgers are ground fresh from local, hormone & antibiotic free beef.
Another great option for all the burger lovers out there is the, “Truffle Burger: Topped with melted swiss and mushrooms sautéed in truffle butter, and truffled mayonnaise $12.99.” This is my fiancé’s favorite and is sure to please any mushroom lover. One great item on the burger menu are the “Sliders,” which is a plate of fries with three miniature Oregon or Truffle burgers, which is a great option to share as a group if you just want a small bite to eat and the meal only costs $10.99. The Menu includes many other tantalizing burgers including, “The Sasquatch Burge,” “Bleugene Burger,” “Jalapeno Burger,” “Thai Chicken Burger,” and the “Grilled Tempeh Burger.”
The overwhelmingly amazing menu continues with another one of my favorites, “Fresh Grilled Salmon: Fillet of fresh salmon lightly seasoned and grilled to perfection, served with lemon, sautéed fresh vegetables and quinoa rice pilaf $16.99.” It is melt-in-your-mouth-delicious and is a great low-fat option for anyone trying to watch what they eat, but if you’re not, you should try their desserts! They serve “Wookies”, which are the equivalent of a pazooki from BJ’s Restaurant. It is an oven fresh, pan baked cookie (your choices are: old fashioned chocolate chip, white chocolate macadamia nut, and chocolate fudge chocolate chip) served warm with ice cream for $5.99. My other favorite dessert option is the, “Oregon Berries Pie: Made with boysenberries, blackberries and blueberries served warm with vanilla ice cream $5.99.”
